Maria Lavelle is filmmaker and journalist based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She moved from Norway to the US in 2014 to study at Augustana University, where she majors in journalism. She’s also involved in the Augustana Theatre and works as an arts editor for the University’s yearbook.
In 2015 she made her directorial debut with a documentary mini-series for regional television in Norway with “More than a Number” That same year she directed a video for Midco Sports Network which aired on regional television in the US.
In early 2016 she directed and produced “Over the Bridge,” together with Sarah Kocher, a 20-minute documentary featuring homelessness in the Midwest for which they won a Jury Award for Social Impact at the Sioux Empire Film Festival. The film was also nominated for “Best Student Doc” at the Brightside Tavern Film Festival in New Jersey, earned a second place at Highway 61 Film Festival in Minnesota, and got accepted to the Awareness Fest 2016 in Los Angeles.
Lavelle aspires to make a career of filmmaking and video journalism in the near future, and dreams of becoming a part of the NYU Tisch Graduate Film Program in 2017.
